The Parkway

WHAT IS THE RED LINE PARKWAY?

The Red Line Parkway is a planned linear park and public space that will follow the Capital Metro Red Line from Downtown Austin to Leander, approximately 36 miles, passing through several communities and natural areas along the way. About half of the trail is a top priority (Tier I) in the City of Austin Urban Trails Plan, and 10-20% is currently completed or funded.

The project has been a community interest since the early 1990s, and in 2004, voters approved the CapMetro Rail commuter line and right-of-way for the Red Line Trail.

Trails and parkways are the lifelines that connect communities, providing a sustainable and accessible transportation alternative for all.

By investing in the Red Line Parkway, we can build a future where people are connected, healthy, and thriving, while preserving our natural environment.

The Red Line Parkway offers several benefits:

Mobility

The project provides additional mobility options, such as walking, biking, and access to transit, which reduces the need for expanding roadway capacity and automobile parking. The Red Line Parkway also increases commuter traffic capacity in congested areas and provides shortcuts for biking and pedestrian connections to the CapMetro Rail Red Line commuter rail, promoting the use of existing transit resources.

Mobility
Economic

Trails and public spaces enhance property values and attract tourist spending, creating desirable places to live and work. The Atlanta Beltline, Minneapolis Midtown Greenway, and the New York City High Line are recent examples of how trails and public spaces can provide economic benefits.

Economic
Health

Trails offer low-cost and healthy recreation and transportation options near residential areas, promoting public health through regular physical and social activity and reducing healthcare costs. The project also improves air quality by creating zero-emission routes and replacing automobile trips.

Public Space & Art

Trails create opportunities for social interaction and reimagining the city of Austin. Trail corridors serve as a flexible canvas for creative design and installation of public art, enhancing shared spaces.

Affordability

Improving accommodations for walking, biking, and transit is a more cost-effective solution than expanding roadway capacity and parking for automobiles. The project increases access to multiple transportation modes in high-opportunity areas, promoting a car-free or car-light lifestyle, especially for those with strained household budgets. The savings benefit individuals, government jurisdictions, and the private sector.
