Recap of the State of the Parkway 2023 + Red Line Parkway Awards

20 December, 2023

We had an exciting night at the State of the Parkway on November 13th! Over 60 attendees enjoyed food & drink, mingled, and listened to remarks from Travis County Commissioner Brigid Shea, Cedar Park Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin, and others.

Commissioner Brigid Shea talked through the “sausage-making” of bringing the $11MM Howard Lane Shared-Use Path to the ballot. The funding was approved by voters last month and will complete a portion of the Red Line Parkway.

Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin presented the State of Cycling in Cedar Park. He noted that while Cedar Park has a lot of momentum, including with the Red Line Parkway, there is still a lot to do: “What I think every child deserves, frankly, is the ability to ride their bike to the library. I always had that, no matter where I lived, as a kid. My kids don’t have that in Cedar Park. A lot of our kids in the region don’t have it.” Once completed, the Red Line Parkway will help connect thousands of kids to the new Cedar Park library in the Bell District.

Red Line Parkway Initiative Executive Director Tom Wald presented awards to eight individuals for their contributions toward completion of the Parkway. Commissioner Brigid Shea was recognized for her instrumental role in providing funding for both Red Line Parkway planning and the Howard Lane Shared-Use Path. CapMetro planning staff Sharmila Mukherjee, Rose Lisska (left), and Jordan McGee (right) were recognized for their roles in commencing the Red Line Trail Study.

City of Austin Transportation & Public Works staff Mike Schofield (center) and Nathan Wilkes (right), and Texas Department of Transportation Austin District staff Heather Ashley-Nguyen and Victor Vargas were recognized for their roles in including car-free crossings for the Red Line Parkway at I-35 in the I-35 Capital Express Project.
