I-35 Caps Funding Action Alert

18 November, 2024

The funding for the I-35 caps, including at both Red Line Parkway crossings, is under threat. City of Austin staff will present to Austin City Council at their 9:00am Work Session during Item B001 tomorrow, November 19th on the Cap & Stitch Funding Strategy.

We encourage you to sign up to speak tomorrow 11/19 and/or send an email to City Council to approve the starter funding (roadway elements) for the I-35 caps.

How to sign up to speak
Online registration closes today 11/18 at 12:00noon. After that, in-person registration at city hall is available until tomorrow 11/19 at 8:15am. You can speak in-person or via phone.

How to send an email
You can send an email to all Austin City Council members anytime, but we recommend sending one today 11/18, if possible.

City Council will not take action at tomorrow's 11/19 Work Session—council action will happen in December. Only the caps that have the starter funding for roadway elements committed by the end of 2024 will ultimately be constructed. Any other caps cannot be constructed until the highway is completely rebuilt again, likely not for another 50-70 years after the I-35 CapEx project is completed, i.e. 2080-2100.

We will continue to work with city council members, city staff, nearby residents, and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcome over the coming weeks.
