Week Without Driving, September 29th to October 5th

Next week is national Week Without Driving 2025, inviting us to experience the everyday realities of those who, by circumstance or choice, do not drive. Nearly a third of people in the United States, including individuals with disabilities, young people, seniors, and those who cannot afford the costs associated with car ownership, navigate their lives without personal vehicles. Their experiences highlight the importance of connected, accessible, reliable public transit and safe, active transportation options for all.

Locally, we are joined by Congress for the New Urbanism - Central Texas (CNU-CTX) and many other peers in participating in the #WeekWithoutDrivingATX. The week includes informational, promotional, and social events, plus three bike rides for a range of abilities that are all on or near the Red Line Parkway. Learn more at the CNU-CTX website.

Action: Burrell Drive Info Session, September 30th 6:30pm

The City of Austin is holding a final info session for Burrell Drive, and we encourage your attendance to help bring these safety and mobility improvements over the finish line. You can share with your neighbors why these improvements are important to you, and share your story of how you and your family depend on new bicycling and walking space for your everyday needs. Learn more on the city's website.

These new protected bike lane and pedestrian improvements will also create a safer and more comfortable space for the current route of the Red Line Parkway through the Wooten Neighborhood.

Action: 2026 City of Austin Bond Program

The public conversation to create the 2026 City of Austin Bond Election package is well under way! As each month goes by, the city gets closer to firming up what will be on the ballot for Austin voters in November 2026. Right now, the city is requesting your ideas for projects or programs for the bond package.

To help ensure funding is included in the bond package for the Red Line Parkway, we are asking you, as a supporter, to submit the Red Line Parkway as a proposed project.

There are only a few required fields, and don't worry about making it perfect or if you don't have much to say right now.

  • For "Describe the program or project you are proposing", be sure to specify "Red Line Parkway". You are welcome to add specific sections of the Red Line Parkway (e.g. in your neighborhood) and/or speak to why it's important to you and the community.
  • For "What type of project is it?", specify either "Transportation or Mobility", "Parks and Recreation", or "Acquisition of Open Space / Water Quality Protection Lands". All of these three funding sources are needed to complete the Red Line Parkway, but if you can't decide, choose "Transportation or Mobility".

Voter-approved Austin bond funding is one of the primary sources that funds construction of the Red Line Parkway. Past voter-approved bonds are currently funding construction of most of the section from Braker Lane to the Northern Walnut Creek Trail.

More Public Input Opportunities

A key function of our periodic newsletter and of our organization itself, is to connect the broader public with opportunities to shape the city, region, and state that we live in. We want to amplify your voices, as Red Line Parkway supporters, and encourage you to take the following surveys that speak to you, generally just a few minutes each.

• Sixth Street Mobility and Revitalization Project •
The City of Austin is seeking your input to shape the iconic Sixth Street in Downtown Austin from Congress Avenue to the future I-35 caps. We encourage you to show support for "Alternative 1" with bicycle/scooter lanes to help meet the demand in this area. Learn more and take the survey by October 19th.

• CapMetro Transit Plan 2035 •
If you missed last month's input opportunity for Transit Plan 2035, you can still help shape our region's largest transit system. CapMetro is hosting an Open House with Pizza on October 6th 5-7pm. Learn more at the Transit Plan 2035 website, or RSVP directly here.

• Great Springs Project Survey •
Our friends at Great Springs Project are asking for your input on the 100-mile trail from San Antonio to Austin. Complete this short survey by early November as their corridor study gets underway.

• Travis County Parks Comprehensive Plan •
Travis County is seeking your input to help shape its parks over the next decade. This generally applies to parks outside of any city limits but within Travis County. Take their current survey by October 23rd.

• City of Austin Transportation Research Study •
The City of Austin is seeking your input on how you get around Central Texas, and what shapes your decisions. The survey results will shape transportation options and how the city communicates about them. Take the survey here now.

Red Line Parkway Updates

Community Vision Plan Update

We're continuing to lay the groundwork to begin the co-creation of the Community Vision Plan & Implementation Strategy, with a target kickoff by the end of next year. The plan will identify a 36-mile, end-to-end trail and linear park alignment, extending the joy manifested in the Boggy Creek Greenbelt to a vast stretch of Central Texas. We will build off last year's pivotal CapMetro Red Line Trail Study, and are aiming for initial results by early 2027 and plan adoption in 2028. Help us stay on track by making a donation toward our $500,000 fundraising goal.

I-35: Northern Stitches and More

In May, Austin City Council approved initial funding for many of the proposed caps over the to-be-expanded I-35. This included funding for both Red Line Parkway crossings over I-35, described currently as the "Northern Stitches". The crossing at 4th St. will be surrounded by a continuous cap over the highway traffic and over the boulevard/frontage road lanes.

Per the council decision, the Red Line Parkway crossing at Hancock Center was to feature a scaled-back cap called a "stitch", which is essentially a land bridge. However, the stitch for the Red Line Parkway is not yet secured. We are working with other community leaders and government agency staff to help ensure the Red Line Parkway does get the promised stitch. Stay tuned for input opportunities expected over the coming weeks. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with any questions or ideas.

More on I-35: TxDOT released their 60% design documents (see "Downloads") for the broader I-35 highway expansion project in early August. We are working closely with other community leaders and agency staff to help ensure the Red Line Parkway, East Avenue Trail, and other walk/bike/transit connections are designed well, with the end user in mind.

Parkway Detours

Multiple projects, including demolition and reconstruction of the Convention Center, the CapMetro Rail Red Line Downtown Station, and I-35 CapEx Central Project, all together affect the Red Line Parkway from San Marcos Street to Trinity Street. Be prepared for evolving detours as these projects progress over the next several years. If the detour route ever seems poorly marked or is in any way unsafe, please be sure to report it to 3-1-1 and, if you don't see prompt improvement, then let us know too.

The nearby Butler Trail is also subject to detours throughout the duration of the I-35 CapEx Central Project.

More Parkway and Vicinity Updates

  • St. Johns Avenue: New bike & walk connections to the Red Line Parkway are coming this fall.
  • Airport Boulevard and Burnet Road: Bike and walk projects are underway this year, improving Red Line Parkway connectivity.
  • East 5th: Stay tuned for new, exciting updates this fall.
  • The Confluence: Due for completion in 2026, the Waterloo Greenway will connect from the Red Line Parkway to Lady Bird Lake.
  • Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements Project: This "wishbone" bridge across the Colorado River will add to the Butler Trail and create a new, beautiful connection from Southeast Austin to East Austin & the Red Line Parkway.
  • Shoal Creek Trail Extension: This new shared-use path will help extend the Shoal Creek Trail to connect with the Red Line Parkway.

Remember, you can use our interactive map to get outdoors and find a good place to visit along the Red Line Parkway!
