No worries—they are seeking all the help they can get! More Parkway and Vicinity Updates

  • I-35 Caps and Stitches: The Red Line Parkway is part of the larger compilation of I-35 Caps and Stitches projects to be built by TxDOT and funded by the City of Austin and the University of Texas at Austin. As the I-35 project is completed over the next several years, the Red Line Parkway will cross car-free at 4th St. and near Hancock Center. Last month, Mayor Kirk Watson proposed defunding both Red Line Parkway stiches and most of the other City of Austin funded caps and stitches. In concert with other community leaders, and with the support of a majority of council members, we were able to hold back the threat to the future of the Red Line Parkway. Thanks to those who spoke up!
  • Saving the Southern Walnut Creek Trail: As part of routinely reviewing upcoming developments and city projects, we (again) discovered a conceptual proposal to build a highway where a portion of the Southern Walnut Creek Trail is. Though not part of the Red Line Parkway, this existing trail is a beloved respite from the built-up and car-oriented parts of our city. Thankfully, many people spoke up, and the developer was willingly ready to remove the concept highway.
  • CapMetro Bikeshare Suspended Indefinitely: Despite the good news that CapMetro Bikeshare continues to expand its coverage area, the service is currently suspended until further notice due to a fire at their maintenance facility on May 23rd. We are hopeful that service can be restored soon!
  • Huntland Drive and Highland Mall Boulevard Project Update: Thanks to those who spoke up based on our last project update. The Huntland Drive project is currently underway, and the Highland Mall Boulevard project will begin as funding allows. Learn more from the City of Austin.
  • Airport Boulevard Shared-Use Path to 46th Street: The City of Austin recently completed a shared-use path along Airport Blvd., creating a continuous path from Lamar Blvd. to 46th St. This provides an important route for the Red Line Parkway, in concert with other helpful parallel options. The city continues to complete a continuous shared-use path that will connect all the way to the Colorado River. Learn more.

Recap: Bike To Work Day

We hosted a Bike To Work Day Fueling Station at Cosmic Saltillo on May 15th. A big thanks goes to our Board President, Jeff Thompson, who did the heavy lifting to set up the station, plus snapped the photo above of bike commuters who stopped by, including Executive Director Tom Wald on the left.

Recap: Neighborhood Fundraisers in Allandale and North Austin
