The temporary signs identify a bike, walk, and run route between Downtown Austin and Northern Walnut Creek Trail
The Red Line Parkway Initiative, in partnership with the City of Austin departments of Transportation and Public Works and Parks and Recreation, plus AARP, Parkhill, and others, has installed temporary wayfinding signage for the Red Line Parkway along a 16-mile route from downtown Austin to the Northern Walnut Creek Trail. The signage identifies the best available route that includes existing trail & park segments, plus on-street bike lanes, sidewalks, and shared streets, and provides access to seven CapMetro Rail Red Line stations along the way. An interactive map of the route (shown in green) can be found on our Resources page, and to the right.
This signed route is part of the Red Line Parkway, a planned 32+ mile trail and linear park from downtown Austin to Cedar Park to Leander. Over time, as new sections of trail are built, the current route of the Red Line Parkway will be updated.
“These wayfinding signs help people young, old, and in between to bike, walk, and run along the existing Red Line Parkway, and to learn more about the effort to complete the 32+ mile trail and linear park,” said Executive Director Tom Wald. “Visitors can combine their Red Line Parkway trip with a ride on the CapMetro Rail Red Line or connect with one of our city’s other trails, such as the Butler Trail, Shoal Creek Trail, or Northern Walnut Creek Trail.”
Funding for the signs was provided by grants from AARP and Parkhill, plus donations from Red Line Parkway supporters. The Red Line Parkway Initiative coordinated with the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department and the Parks and Recreation Department on the design (see image to the right) and location of the signs.

More background
The Red Line Parkway Initiative is a non-profit, founded in 2017, dedicated to building a vibrant trail and linear park along the CapMetro's Red Line, connecting Downtown Austin to Cedar Park and Leander. Our goal is to unite partners and communities to plan, fund, build, and activate dedicated spaces for cyclists and pedestrians along the Parkway. This Parkway will provide car-free transportation options that are accessible to ALL members of the community options while fighting the effects of climate change.
At the State of the Parkway on Thursday, November 14th, Red Line Parkway Initiative Executive Director Tom Wald will provide updates and major next steps for the Red Line Parkway, building on the 2024 completion of the CapMetro Red Line Trail Study. CapMetro CEO Dottie Watkins, Leander City Council Member and CapMetro Board Member Becki Ross, and others to be announced soon will also provide remarks.
